i started a xp disk and let it do a QUICK format (fat) then i put a 98 disk in and ran scandisk from the d:win98 prompt , with /autofix , this then marked the bad bits , and i was able to use the drive

If it's under warranty try to get a RMA. Once drives start developing bad sectors you know they don't have long to live.

Seagates (as well as many other drives) are having built-in serial (COM) interface for testing/repairing/updating firmware and so on... (not so many people ever heard of it, I guess )
So, it is possible to connect the harddrive to the PC's Serial port using simple enough schematics (just only one TTL IC as an interface circuit is need), and DOS terminal utility for executing built-in self-test commands and monitoring responce...
This technology first was used in Conner harddrives before Conner Periferals became part of Seagate Technology, and now all U-series Seagates are using it.

But the simplest solution could be just do Zero-filling using Ontrack Disk Manager or MHDD util scan with enabled "bad sectors remap" an option...

Is the problem that the HD has bad sectors or is it that the HD won't take data?

I would also ask if you used the Seagate Disk Wizard to install the HD or if you just installed it the way you would normally install it?

I recommend you use the Disk Wizard. My 40G Seagate wouldn't work properly until I did. (and I'm using Win98) I also would recommend you use the utilities described in Confus-ed's posts. Also contact Seagate Tech Support for more info.

    Good Luck,

Got this problem once, used Zap & Wipe the drive was fine, if after that Fdisk/Format fails run scandisk will lock the Bad Sec. If drive is still in
    warranty RMA it.
