    DOSIDLE and Mouse?

I am experimenting with a wonderful little TSR program by Martin Balog, DOS Idle.

As the name would imply, it throttles processor use when DOS is idle. A DOS VM running without DOS Idle consumes about 75% of processor time on an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ just sitting there at a C:\ prompt. With DOS Idle, the consumption is reduced to near 0%.

But there are some peculiarities. If DOS Idle is loaded before an application is launched (as in from Autoexec.bat), most mouse function is lost. If it is loaded from a command prompt within the application, the mouse works OK. But then if the application is closed and relaunched with DOS Idle left running, mouse function is severely impaired again.

I am using Logitech Mouseware 7.x. I have lost/misplaced my library of DOS mouse drivers. There was an MS one that I remember liking -- much leaner than Logitech's.

    Any ideas here?

Anyone know of any Internet archives of DOS mouse drivers?

    Thanks.

You extract it like this, possibly fromthis

If mouse.exe isn't in there, it will have to be an archive elsewhere... or I go look at my floppies for the first time in 5 years...

    Thanks.

    I will try cutemouse http://cutemouse.sourceforge.net/

And there are some MS things here

    Going back to version 7.x.

My old fav for most DOS things was version 6, I think.

Well, changing mouse drivers does nothing. Changing the order of loading devices and TSRs does nothing.

So I suppose the workaround is to put DOS Idle in the Autoexec.bat file and launch applications from bat files that unload DOS Idle before they run the app and then reload DOS Idle when they shut down. CPU usage for a running application is pretty much the same with or without DOS Idle as a TSR. The big change is when the system is sitting doing nothing.

Heh, if it's doing nothing, then you could turn it off
