Win98/2k Dual Installation Onboard Sound Problem

    Hi Gang,

I have Win98Se on my 1st HD. Today I tried to install Win2k on my 2nd HD. Everything was going to plan. I installed Win2k on my second HD. When I tried to get sound however and I could not. I abandoned the installation for the night and decided to work on it the next day.

The next day I noticed that I couldn’t get sound on Win98SE either!.

I have Unininstalled the drivers and reinstalled them on both drives. Problem when I do this is on my first HD I get 95% of the way done and the drivers stop loading. I mean stalls into infinity. I have tried this several times and the same results happen.

Nothing shows up on the Device Manager in Win98 bad. I just have no sound. Also, I deleted Win2k from the 2nd disk thinking that a driver conflict caused it. I still have the choice to boot to Win2k even though Win2k is not there.

What can I do to restore my sound to Win98SE?

    Onboard sound, AC97. K7SEM (ECS) Win98SE, 2nd HD blank.

    Thanks,
    Orangeman

SiS 7018 - try going to Sis driver site and in category select audio, subcategory blank, product sis 730 and your os.

Download those drivers and try to install.

    Hi NooNoo,

I installed that application. No sound. When I tried to play a wave file just to test it I got an error message
“ Another application is playing audio. You can either interrupt the application or wait until it is done. Then try using Sound Recorder again." The problem is that there is NO other sound application playing.

It sounds that perhaps the Win2k version of the sound card driver is crowding the Win98Se version out. Although I erased everything on the 2nd drive. I don't know how or where it is doing it, but it is.

No, you have got confused drivers. Unzip the sis drivers to an easily found directory. c:\sound

Go to safe mode, make a note of what driver files it is using in the driver tab in device manager, delete the sound card and associated stuff from device manager... and any ghosts as well. Then go hunting for the driver files and rename them. Also go to start, run, msconfig... make sure that there are no programs starting up to do with the sound - mixers or stuff like that.

Shut down, restart, the detection should start. Point windows to the new drivers at c:\sound.

    Good luck
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    I'm the confus-ed one !!

Methinks its nothing to do with drivers,

So why would the drivers (previously working) in 98 have magically changed because of an XP install? Unless we weren't putting that where it ought....

Methinks its to do with ACPI (or bios allocations if that's off) but let's see first if Noo's fix works ....

First, you are Confused, it was Win2k, not Win XP. Second, if all you want is to be is sarcastic, I wish you wouldn't post. Third NooNoo's solution did work.

    Thank you NooNoo

    I'm glad Noo's solution worked ....

Orangeman you seem to have lots of problems with often the wrong or confused or partial symptomology described, which was why I posted what I did ....

If you'd installed w2k (excuse my mistake, I am of course confus-ed ) correctly there is no way that would affect your 98 install whatsoever, except 'perhaps' in bios ....

The very fact that re-installing drivers in 98se fixed your problem with that o/s shows its nothing to do with your w2k install (unless the w2k setup decided to just overwite your sound drivers just to 'do your head in')

Perhaps that error was there before & you didn't notice ? .... Either way its fixed now & that was the point.

If you feel my posts are too 'sarcastic' for you, you can use the boards features to 'blank' all my replies & they won't trouble you further ...

We can only ever 'guess' based on what info you provide, it seems Noo is 'wise to you' & I am not able to second guess your descriptions of what has & hasn't happened....

In this case Noo was busy fixing your 98 install (glad that's now ok), I was speculating why a w2k (okay I said xp!) install in addition to the 98 install might mess up your original install, different question & thus a different answer, I made the mistake of assuming that the 98 install was ok in the first place, Noo, bless her little googling cotton socks, was as I say 'wise' to it.......

Don't take it so hard; he was actually trying to help. He made many of the same misassumptions I made, that was why I didn't post because I too can't understand the reason why the 2k install hosed sound in 98, if you installed the way you said. It doesn't make sense, and when troubleshooting in the dark like we sometimes do on the forums, you get hung up on the wrong issue...

Let it go man, Confus-ed mentality is sometimes hard to swallow, but take it with a grain of salt, you might find some wisdom in his words...

    Thanks Ya-know,

Its 5:45am in this part of the world and I've been working on this installation all day (and all night long). Its time for me to get some sleep.

    Later,

This from the man with big sticky out finger !

There was much more to this reply, but for the sake of 'world peace' I edited it ....

Orangeman - I always post to help. I'll try & remember you don't always give all the picture .... if you remember that I'm usually typing with a sly grin on my face..... hopefully you are snoozing away now .... with the same face ...
