    Resolved [RESOLVED] Random Freezing

When I start my friend's computer it freezes at the Windows Me screen. Then when I restart and go to normal mode it goes through. However, whenever I do any work on the computer it will freeze. Sometimes I'm able to type a Word document fine other times it freezes. I've tried to lower the graphic acceleration in windows to None but it still give me problems. This is on a system that was recently formatted. Any ideas would be appreciated.

first check the cooling of the chip....see if it's running a little warm....this would cause lockups at random times.

I’v heard this one before but I can’t remember if it was a processor or memory problem but I’m sure it’s one of the two.

    I had a problem similar.

Finnaly I think it's was the MB. Maybe's the cooling or something else. Try a different MB.

    Cool

run a memory test first...also disable any unnecessary software starting when Windows does...much of the 'freeware' I see loaded on customers machines is poorly written and can cause all kinds of problems.

Swap in a different RAM module. A flakey RAM module can cause random errors both in time and apparent cause....tore my hair out for three days because I had a bad RAM stick ... and it was NEW right out of the box.

If your friend has just upgraded this machine, it could be a hardware IRQ conflict. Check the IRQ's and or the DMA's.
    Other possible causes:
    1. Some viruses can cause a PC to crash or reboot alot.
    2. Check that power supply cables are attached securly.
    3. Check power supply voltages.
    4. Check the CPU. (is it hot)
    5. Check all Mem sticks.
    6. Check all expansion boards. (seated properly)
    7. Inspect the Mobo at all metal stand offs for metal screws touchinhing any tracers.
    8. Drink an Ice cold one... if your under age, an ice cold soda.

Good luck... it takes patience, but you'll find the culprit.
