Got this from dell support:
Is it normal for the hard drive activity light to stay on or flash constantly?
The hard drive activity light is actually an Input/Output indicator. If a network card or other peripheral device with a high Input/Output volume is installed on the unit, the light may stay on or flash constantly. http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/doc...p?DN=FA1011800

Thanks Shawn , I had never seen this before and it just didn't occur to me that it might be "normal"....its a poor day that you don't learn something.
