What is the best way to set up my IDE devices?
Hi guys I would like to know the best way to set up my IDE devices. Basically I wnat to know what way will give the best speed & stability. My system has a mainboard with ULTRA ATA 100 onboard and I have a PCI IDE ULTRA ATA 66 card as well, My drives are as follows:
Seagate U series 5 ATA 100 20 GIG
Maxtor ATA 66 13.5 GIG
Samsung ATA 33 10.2 GIG
and the following CD drives:
Sony CDRW 10xw 4xrw 32xr
Sony CDRW 4xw 2xrw 24xr
Creative Labs DVD 5x
What would be the best way to configure these units?
any help would be highly apreciated.

I would place each hard drive on its own IDE channel. If your DVD drive is ATA 33 or 66 match it with the hard drive that operates at the same speed. Possibly put both of your writers on the last open channel. I think that if you mismatch ATA speeds the channel will operate at the lowest speed.

That's what I would also do.

You may also want to check with your manufacturer's website. I found a Bios update from ABIT that would allow devices to run at different ATA speeds on the same cable... Made life much easier for me..

Put the largest ATA 100 drive on a channel on it's own, then the second largest on the secondary. Put the writers on seperate channels on the PCI card then either the DVD or the ata 33 drive with them, preferably with the least likely source on the same channel as your prefered writer.
As for putting devices of different speeds on the same controller channel I would suggest that Abit doesn't know its elbow from some other part of its anatomy!
