Weird question: making an air conditionner?
Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to make an effective air conditioner using peltiers? I would put few peltiers in a box with a heatsink on both sides, there would be fans on the hot sides to blow to hot air out the window and other fans on the cool sides blowing into the room.
Would this make an effective air conditionner using 2-4 peltiers and a few fans and heatsinks? I just want a cheap air conditionning solution because my mom never wants to leave the central air conditonner on and it's always 5-10 degrees hotter in my room because of the PC.
Thanks

the cocept is sound, but I don't think 2-4 peltiers would produce enough energy to cool a room. It would be like dropping an ice cube in a large pot of boiling water. It will bring the temp down some, but the overall effect would be minimal. I could be wrong about that, I'm not sure that but two - four cpu peltiers wouldn't be adequate.
It would be kinda cool though.

No, Peltiers are FAR too ineffective for this. A single typical device drawing around 50W can cool a small drinks chest, and runs at less than 10% efficiency. A modest room air conditioner may draw around 1500W and convert something like 60% or 70% of that to cooling.
There are much more effective devices than Peltier coming up, but for now, the old compressor is it.
Incidentally, both are better at heating than cooling, vapour phase (refrigeration) heating being better than 100% efficient.

Open a window?
Buy a desk mounted fan?
Buy a free-standing evaporative air conditioner?
So many simple solutions, why even consider system designed to cool CPU's?....

The evaporative aircon is one that sucks air through wet pads to cool it and blows it through the room. They are effective when the humidity is low, but horrible in high humidity. You have to have a path for the air to flow through the room for it to work properly. They're fairly cheap to buy and run.

Get a small window unit. I had the same prob in my comp room so I got a used window unit for $60 (US) and it can drop the temp in there as low as 60 deg F when combined with the central heat.
Of course you could try not running all your machines at once.
