Merely curious as I am a retired veteren (USAF). Dont be shy, it can be anything-active-reserve, guard, dependent. Would be interesting to hear from people in the military other than the US too.

    Thanks

PS Sorry if this has already been a topic.

Ex Navy Fire Controlman. That's an electronics technician that works on weapon systems. I used to operate, maintain, and instruct students on the same for the Tomahawk Weapon System. 70's and 80's technology was still working reliably, if you knew how to manage the system. Hard drives that weighed 25 pounds and had 64.5 mb of storage.....4 Zilg 80 processors in parallel processing a 64 bit double precision Unix word....old stuff.

I personally have not been in the military, but my dad is a 20 year veteran of the Navy he retired at 37 (he lied about his age and joined a month before his 18th birthday to fight in Vietnam, but the war ended while he was in boot camp.) and now he draws a pension and he is only 45 now. He was part of a landing party when the US was at war with Libya, and he has PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) because he witnessed some of his buddies get killed in front of his eyes during that whole Qadaffi fiasco. Also he was in a boiler room explosion in 1976 that sprayed 1000 degree liquid onto his legs from mid-thigh down. It literally melted the skin from parts of his legs. He has some pretty neat looking scars on his ankles and knees.

My brother is joining the Air Force next week. He is going so that he gets a new skill and to get some college money.

I'm a contractor for the Military, an LT in the Civil Air Patrol (USAF Aux.) and with luck I'll be going to National Guard OCS in order to become a pilot. Anyone have any tips they can give me?

I signed up for the 18th Service Battalion here in Thunder Bay (Communications)...

I lasted a day and a half. Literally. I remember three things about the time: stripping a rifle on my first day, being the only person in my batch of recruits who could finish the intelligence test within an hour, and the Master Corporal who led me out when I quit telling me that the reason I was leaving because my head was full of s%%t.

Also, that there were a lot of really cool toys in my kit.

I am a former Air Force Power Pro.
I made operated, repaired and maintianed emergency elctrical power systems. Generators and UPS. I kept the lights on and the hard drives spinning.
From 1991 to 1996 I was staioned at Kadena AB on the Japanese Island of Okinawa. I worked 200 hundred yards from the memoirial marker where the bodies where placed prior to burial during the battle of Okinawa. I worked with Japanese people. I lived in a Japanese neighborhood.

I spent 36 days in Saudi Arabia. I spent a year at Buckley ANGB in Aurora, CO. I left to be closer to my kids. I really miss it.

When I talk to my high school buddies I feel lucky to have these experiences to draw on.
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. Well, the WINDrivers forum anyway.
