    Win XP Software RAID

I was just wondering if software RAID was possible in Win XP Pro.

Or if there was some program out there that would do it for me.

    Thanks

I don't mean to thread crap, but my advice: Stay away from software RAID. I learned the hard way, anything but hardware based RAID 5 is a waste of time.

If you have more than one drive, then keep them that way. C:, D:, E:, etc..

just out of curiousity, how did you do the software raid?? Can you do it through XP or did you have to use second party software?

you can do it through winxp just like win2k. there are several big inherint flaws with it however.

the first problem and perhaps the largest is that you to accomplish software RAID you must convert your discs to dyanmic discs (a microsoft technology) which makes data recovery from a failed disk MUCH MUCH more difficult.

the other problem is that you can't install windows in the software raid. a problem you don't have if you spend the 20-30 bucks for a IDE raid controller that will mirror, stripe, and stripe with mirroring.

if you REALLY want to do it here's how

what about a third-party software like this one

Has anyone ever tried one of these, or ever heard anything good or bad about them?

I honestly couldn't see paying $60 for that when you can get a controller for $22

Not to mention the overhead with software RAID. Expect to lose nearly 1/3 or more of your CPU and memory at any given time..........
