are these machines all networked? If so disable the nic in device manager, reboot....see what happens

check for viruses, run spybot, and check to make sure no unauthorized programs are running, looks like your OS is trying to do something, and it's not being allowed.

It won't hurt to check the event viewer to see if anything shows up there.

Like Matridom said check the event viewer and see if anything suspicious shows up there
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

OK..it happens to three different computers..
    happens with totally clean install
no networking going on (btw, is there a nic installed for internet?)if so disable it and try again like Noo says

does the problem persist in safe mode?

So you have to look at common factors..after you check the event viewer.

I'm curious just how different these three computers are..any memory upgrades purchased from the same place? other parts the same? what processors and chipsets?
temp and voltages of each system? What was used to install the OS? same disk? slipstreamed?

common environmental factors? i.e. room temp, wall power fluctuations, etc?

I do not remember the specific entry. But I had a similar issue with using one of the 5-in-1 XP CD ISOs that I had found. After installing, I had to run gpedit.msc and go into Computer Configuration-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings--> There will be an entry for group policy update from a domain controller or something different. Disable it. You should be good after that. I cannot remeber the specific for the life of me. Event Viewer should give you a lead to find the key though.
