    Is udma enabled in bios?
Does the drive properties show it to use dma where possible?

OK, this is xp, do you have sp1 installed?

Have you run a diagnostic on the hard drive?

What cable type did you use to plug the hard drive into the motherboard?

What port does the hard drive attach to on the motherboard?

    Eh !?!?!

DMA is a property of the IDE controller channel in XP (not like in 9x where for some stupid reason it shows its a property of the device - it might be, but if the channel its on doesn't have it on too - it won't work!)

If you go look again, I'm almost certain (as certain as I ever am about anything!) that you'll find an option to turn on/off dma (or UDMA) 'lurking' somewhere in bios ....

    problem with channels

Sometimes the hard drive or the Cds change their conf. and the system performace fall to the ground

Delete all the items listed in the IDE/ ATAPI sub at the device manager

(left button on mypc, properties, Hardware, device manager)

the most of the items here reload or redetect when you turn on your computer again

    greetings

Do you have any cdrom drives slaved to the hard drive(s) in question? This can cause transfer rates to go down as well sometimes.
Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.
