ASUS P4PE & SoundMax - No sound / Sound skips

Would appreciate any help you can offer

    My system -

    Penntium 4 - 2.4 MB
    ASUS P4PE mobo
w/ SoundMax Integrated Sound (I havent installed my Audigy 2 Platinum Ex card yet and wont for a while)
    Win98SE
    Directx v9.0b

I have the latest Soundmax drivers installed but.....

    Problem:

My music/sound files either DONT PLAY at all, or they skip when played (they sound like they are sped up and going too fast)

My music files USED TO WORK fine but something changed and I cant figure it out

I have done a dxdiag to try and see what works but I get no sound.
I have previously played with the Hardware Acceleration settings but I have set it at each of the settings on the slider and still am having issues

    Here's what works/doesnt:

**Quicktime Player v6.5 - Music plays JUST FINE**

Playing music through either of my CDRom or CDRW drives with headphones - works fine and no skips

Windows Media Player v9.0 throuh speakers - Music plays but SKIPS / Sped Up

Real Player v10 - NO SOUND

Creative Media Source - Songs SKIP

DIVX Player - Skips MPG and WMV video files

Kazaa Avi Preview - Sounds / Video Skips

Music Match Player - NO SOUND

    WinAmp v5.01 - NO SOUND

    Any ideas?
Yes my speakers are turned on and plugged in

Please help me if you can

    I really appreciate it as I am a HUGE music/ mp3 fan

Any ideas why my front USB's dont work
    My back ones work fine
If I put in my memory stick or digital camera nothing
If I plug it in the back they are fine

    Sincerely

    King Lerxt

    Welcome to Windrivers kinglerxt

Have you loaded the motherboard drivers? You might also want to uninstall that virus superhighway you have.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
