    Linux Downloads...

    Hello,

I've finally been able to put together a PC out of spare parts, and I want to install Linux on it. I'm looking to learn the OS. Does anyone have any opinion on which company to go for (Mandrake, RedHat, Etc.)? Is there anyway to download any of these to CD to install later? Ok, last question, are any of these free?

    Thank You.

    Mandrake download:
    http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3

It is free. Better have broadband, or forget it. If you want to really learn Linux, and jump in with both feet, Gentoo or Slackware, or Debian may be what you're looking for.

If you want to go slow, use Mandrake.

Try Linux.org for info. Good luck....

Gollo is much knowledgeable and would be able to help. Hopefully, he'll see your post...

Try Knoppix Linux it will boot up from the cd at go right into X Windows. That way you can get a feel for it without formatting your drive or installing it permanatly. Hope this helps

I'll hop in and suggest both of the above.

I'm on the verge of getting Mandrake 10 (2.6 kernel) as that was my favourite distro in the past when Corel Linux disappeared after Microsoft's investment in the company...

Knoppix is great to learn your way around too without much overhead, and you can still use the PC for something else.
