Does the lappie have a floopy drive? If so, find out the manufacturer of the drive and d/l the mfg diag for it and run the test. Is this still under warranty?
Also, the most important thing if you have data on the drive that you need, is to test it. If it fails, do not keep trying to boot, as the drive will become worse, and any chance of data recovery by you will be next to impossible.
Let's make sure that the drive is bad first, because other issues can cause that error as well.
Good luck.

Replace the hard drive. I hope it is under warranty.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Where are you located. With that info we'll be able to narrow down the price.
Also, I see that you have two threads going about this. I didn't realize this before.
NooNoo, could you merge these please. Thanks.

Check out Newegg.com as well. You can pick up a 40GB 5400RPM laptop hard drive for between $85.00-$106.00 depending on the manufacturer.

Try unplug the drive and plug it in again, if you got a floppy drive use a boot disk and fdisk the drive then run scandisk.
