I'm not sure what the bit about msword and the broken registry has to do with anything. Do you have a windows cd (or any other bootable cd)? If so, make sure the bios is set to boot from cd and reboot w/ that cd in the drive. If the drive can read the cd at boot, then your issue is not hardware related.

Forget the dos access and the win98 boot disk. You need a bootable windows CD to test the drive. Does the computer allow boot from CD? This needs to be enabled in bios. If you don't know, provide the make/model of the computer or motherboard.

Then the drive is dead and will have to be replaced.

If he has a scratched system cd will it not fail this test ? I think it may... but this stop start working business is not sounding good, I'd check cabling & maybe try a lens cleaner.. whether the state of any system cd is affecting matters can be checked by using the boot disk with cd support & trying to read a range of data cd's (this method isn't as infallible as using bios to launch any reading, but much less complicated than windows).
