It will still work, but the bios would show the rpm's as system not cpu. If it is plugged into a PSU plug, then BIOS won't report any rpm's at all, but it will still work. Plus, some HSF's, especially high speed ones, will be problematic if plugged into the mainboard.

CPU Temperature is 54 degrees System Temperature is 40 degrees

To my knowledge these seem fairly higer than normal.
They aren't perfect, high system temperature here is probably pushing up your cpu temperature a lot - this sounds in isolation like case airflow issues.

0 fan speed for cpu showing in bios & a 'heaving noise' may mean that everything is connected right, but the fan is too dirty to achieve a speed that will register on the fan sensor (if it calms down, I'd say this makes it all the more likely) - btw do we have a chipset fan also ? is that making a noise too & accounting for the apparent high system temps ?

I'd have had this to bits ages ago !

I havn't changeed anything as yrt but the system has been running all day now and has not mad a sound.

Ill try it for a while see if it stays the same it might have been something to do with the PSU after all.

    Thanks

I don't really understand your reluctance to take it to bits again, having recently changed your psu ? (its not like you are worried about warranty or you are 'inexperienced' if you can do do that) .. I'd certainly want to know about any possiblities on the 'making noise front' as very often after a period of 'noiseyness' followed by sudden quiteness may indicate total failure .. your decision however, but I'd definately take it to bits to be sure (for the time involved - but do you have to travel to this ? Is that why ?), or else the possibility of it suddenly & completely (& more expensively breaking !) would weigh on my mind ..
