    Welcome to Windrivers Laugh

What operating system are you using? If it's XP then right click my computer, select properties, advanced tab, startup and recovery button, uncheck automatically restart box, apply and ok. Now it will display the problem in a Blue screen (of death)

Post what the Bsod says so someone can help you further.

yes i am using xp pro i did what u asked and here is what bsod says
    file nv4_disp.dll
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    ****STOP 0X000000850 (0XE289B284, 0X00000000, 0XBFA01C57, 0X00000001)
    nv4_disp_address BFA01C57 base at BF9B8000 Datestamp 42DF2742
then when i restarted i got the system recovered from a serious error here are the details from that
    C:\Windows\Minidump\mini092805-01.dmp
    C:\Docume~1\Carla\LOCALS~1\Temp\Wer1.tmp.dir00\sys data.wml

after being able to read the bsod i am wondering if its my video card going goofy on me.

it may well be... but what drivers are you using? This message is also generated when a driver has corrupted or the video card overheats.

ok, uninstall that one, and go back to the previous whql version available at nvidia. Also consider the possiblity of the card overheating.

well we got rid of the random reboot but now the screen flickers when i play card games. we had to pull the vid card out and we are using the onboard video to try to stop the flickering. it lessened the amount of flickering but didn't stop it completely. any help would be greatly appreciated.

in my experience, I'd look at monitor refresh rate or PSU pushing too much juice through the board.
Go into your display settings and check the refresh rate. If the 5600 has fan, make sure you can freely turn it before reinstalling it. If it doesnt turn you may have to "modify" it if it is no longer in warrenty.

    Good Luck.
