CD Drives Not Working on Win 2000
Hi,
I have a PC running Windows 2000 professional. I had to do a repair install on the machine and since doing this the cd drives no longer recognise any form of disk. When I insert a cd or DVD it brings up a message stating that the disc is not formatted, do you want to format it now?
The drives are fine as they work in DOS outside of Win 2000. I'm going to try reinstalling the Service Pack to see if that works, however beyond this I'm a bit stuck. I have also updated all chipset drivers as a precautionary measure.
Best Regards

Tried updating the service pack but drives still not working.
Anyone got any ideas before I'm forced to format this machine?
Thanks

Hi Nero was installed on the machine. However the direct cd part was not installed.
I have tried uninstalling Nero but it has made no difference.
Cheers

here's everything I have bookmarked from microsoft about cdroms being annoying, or has helped me fix it stuff like this in the past.

Are the drives set to cable select? I've found cable select to be the problem once or twice and changing them specifically to master and slave fixes it. Try changing the IDE chain. Headbutt the case, sometimes that works...

Have you tried to update the drivers for the optical drive? Also try, uninstall the optical drive. flash the bios then reinstall it when the system auto detects it. I really think its driver issue or issue with nero. I have two dvd burners after I installed nero, nero created a third drive and locked up my second drive. I had to uninstall Nero, then it was fine.
