    Just in case...

I posted this in the Windows Server 2003 forum, but it doesn't look as though that area is used/read much. Apologies for the double post. <_>

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Hi everyone.

I am looking to update my company's back-up software for our Windows Server 2003 (Standard Edition) boxes. We currently use a piece of software called Retrospect by Dantz Software. It kind of works, but the version we use (6.5) doesn't wholly work with the Operating System.

Are there any recognized solutions out there for this sort of thing? Back-ups would include pervasive.sql and sql and a couple of other programs.

    Thanks in advance.

Most modern backup programs will either back up files in use or include "agents" to back up popular file types. I don't know if PervasiveSQL is covered by an agent but you can always use Scheduler and a batch file to get around that, as in this example I use on my Sybase SQLAnywhere server:

    net stop sqla
    copy \\coding_sys\coding\cmsystem.db \\coding_sys\temp\cmsystem.db
    copy \\coding_sys\coding\cmdata.db \\coding_sys\temp\cmdata.db
    net start sqla

I sell my Clients that run servers on Image Backups using Acronis True Image Server. It is more expensive than some and probably is best done with external hard drives, but that's my 2 cents.

At the source of every error which is blamed on the computer, you will find at least two human errors, including the error of blaming it on the computer.
