Windows 98 Drivers Will Not Install
Hi!
I have a problem with Windows 98 Sound not installing.
Mfg Intel Motherboard Chipset i845G
Motherboard Name: Rexburg D845GRG
MotherB intergraded Devices - Audio, Video
The WDM_A389 from DirectX (Realtek AC'97 Audio A3.89) WORKED fine before I Upgraded Win98 to SE. Got this from "Street1" on WinDrivers. Also, installed DirectX(R)8 and even v.9 said required.
When I installed the Realtek AC'97 Audio A3.89. Said install shield wizare has finished for maintenance operation. Do you want to restart? Yes, started building driver data base then page came on and said A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028: C0014f00

Windows 98 Audio No Sound
Hey Street1 & Slavedriver!
In the: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...18&submit=Go%21
by street1 - wasn't sure what to download!!!
Tried the Realtek AC'97 Audio A3.89 + The SoundMax Cadenza win98. They load but reboot but then start to build driver data base then the Realtek AC97 audio A3.89 says a fatal exception occured.
Found this on the Everest for my computer, but could not find on Intel or elsewere:
Audio Chipset
1981A Integrated Digital Audio codec.

This is the page you want to download from as noted by Slavedriver earlier - NOTE that the inf should be installed first BEFORE any other additional drivers -

Hi CCT!
I downloaded and installed:
INF: Intel 82801DB ICH4 [INFINST
Also I downloaded and installed from the same page:
Integrated Audio Driver [WDM3516B_CADENZA.EXE]
Integrated audio driver for Intel desktop boards using AC '97 processing with the Analog Devices (ADI) AD1885, AD1980, AD1981A or AD1981B codecs OS:Windows* 2000, Windows* 98 SE.
This audio driver installed, shut down and on startup was looking for drivers. Should I chuck this one and install the WDM_A389 from DirectX (Realtek AC'97 Audio A3.89), which WORKED fine before I Upgraded Win98 to SE.

Boot to safe mode "delete any devices under sound controllers" then try installing your file.

Hi Slavedriver!
Could not boot to Safe Mode from Win98 but could from XP, because of BM partition. Could and Did delete audio from the Add/Delete in control panel.
Decided to reinstall the Realtek AC'97 audio, the one that used to work. But I reinstalled the inf before It installed then restarted to look for drivers and said a fatal exception occured - had to shut down.
In this package the whole lot are there under:
Multimedia Drivers: below
Audio Devices
Audio for Realtek AC'97 audio
Audio for unimodem
half duplex wave devices
down to
Audio Compression Codecs 9 of these
Would it be better for me to get a PCI Sound Card like SB?

Hi OMGmissinglink!
Yes, you are right about running two OS's is pretty silly! I finally came to my senses and abandonded that project. Will only run the XP in the future. But, the XP does not run the older programs, which one can run on windows98. That was my sole purpose. Thanks again for your response.

Have you ever right clicked on the icon for the program you are attempting to run in XP...........Then go to properties, compatibility, lot of options there.

If you want to run older or different OSs like Linux use either VMware,Microsoft Virtual PC [Freeware] or DOSBox [freeware] its a lot simpler. There a several premade images available for VMWare if you look round the net like FreeDos or flavours of Linux.
