IE wont connect to internet
Hello,
Ive just been looking at a friends computer and for some reason IE wont connect to the net. I can ping websites and email works but just not IE.
Ive done the following.
Unticked proxy server settings under LAN settings in tools>options>connctions.
Ran Hijack this but didnt find anything
Ran windows defender and his kaspersky virus scanner but found nothing.
He said that kaspersky found a few trojans the other day and removed them.
What can I use that doesnt require net access to try and find any further troajns etc? Thats assuming that is what the problem is.
Thank you for the help.

did you check the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. I have seen sometimes where entries get in there that prohibit internet access.
A normal one should look like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
If there any other IP entries at the bottom remove them. Have you tried downloading firefox from another computer and installing it to see if it could be just a corrupt IE. Also can you go to the webpages by using the ip instead of the name?

Install firefox and if it runs then repair IE or just run firefox. You will need IE sooner or later though.

Try winsockfix:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml
It runs a buncha commands and stuff that you could do manually if you had to but the program means I don't have to type it all out . It fits on a floppy too.

In IE tools, internet options, delete cookies, delete files and clear history.
Then Start, Run, type cmd /k ipconfig /flushdns
Then Start, Run, type cmd /k ipconfig /registerdns
To repair Winsock if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
installed, Start, Run, type cmd /k netsh winsock reset

If you've done the basic TCP/IP fixes and IE still doesn't connect, I consider malware a more likely problem than a corrupted IE installation. Spybot Search and Destroy still has definition update files that you can download and save, then run manually to install the updates. So, I'd whip out my trusty pendrive, load up the Spybot S&D installation file and the update and install on your friend's computer. Disable system restore and scan in safe mode.

Come to think of it, try removing Java if its installed. I've seen Java 6.1 cause IE to stop functioning properly like that.

If the computer has kaspersky suite disable the firewall part of it and see if it is able to get on the Internet.
If so then you need to adjust the firewall settings.

That would go for any security suite as I've seen Norton, McAfee, Freedom, etc do the same.

Oh, let's not forget that removing some security suites and AV software,(most often Norton)can cause problems with connectivity. I've also seen cases where McAfee Site Advisor has completely blocked IE web access.
