Welcome to Windrivers ethelica.
Did you get the drivers from Lenovo (IBM)?
What's the full model for the Thinkpad?

You can try drivers from this site:
http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm#pci
DriverGuide has a reference to the PCI 1938-1946 SE3047 driver for Win 98 and that chip is shown with an XP driver.

Which page on the internet?
Lenovo fully support this machine with windows XP. All you need to do is go to Lenovo here and download what you need. In addition, there are support documents and updates specifically for running XP on your 390x
