You have a lot of stuff loading thats irrelevant.
Turn off system restore to start
The go to
www.bitdefender.com lower left Scan Now
www.ewido.com lower left Scan Now
remove and upgrade you adobe 7
You need to look at "msconfig" there is a lot of un needed stuff loading at boot that must be killing that machine

Ctrl-Alt-Delete and bring up the Task Manager.
<Application Tab> -> <New Task> In the small box that opens type <explorer.exe> and click on <OK>.
That should bring your desktop back.
What you do after that...

You don't really say what's going on with your hijack. I have come across hijacks that cover your desktop with a blank page not allowing you to do anything. If I recall, there is one pixel at the top right of your screen that you can click and drag. When you do, your desktop will be accessible and you can access your active desktop to get rid of this critter.

To start, get rid of:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.whynotsearchhere.com/start.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local

The last 2 are activex downloaders. If you KNOW they are safe, then leave them.
The other stuff checks out as bad or suspicious.
edit: you left out the top part of the report which looks like this if you are up-to-date:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 9:43:08 AM, on 05/03/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Boot mode: Normal
If you haven't got SP2 and all the latest Critical updates, then you are asking for trouble.

sorry guys if i wasnt too clear on what was happening to my desktop on my original post. First of all I used to have a picture of my little girl, which now has turned into what to me seems like a web page...it has links on the very top and botom that change every time i reboot my pc, some within the middle area of the desktop are always the same, Ive clicked on some of the links and they take you to "funny pictures or scenes". I have not seen anything that resembles an "x" or an option to close down what is taking over. Also a search bar has been installed on my taskbar. With all this still going on I have all my icons still available to me that I once had. One other thing, when i right click on the desktop and go to properties, the only thing i can do is change the color of the backgrownd......browsing for pic has been disabled and even when i change the background color the onlything that changes color is the bacground on the icon names on my desktop. I hope this gives you a better idea of what is going on...Thanks for the info so far, i will give start on some of the fixes and report back what happens.. HUGE THANX

Right click on the desktop, select properties, select desktop tab and click customise desktop button. On the dialogue that opens, click web and uncheck any pages there - you may need to uncheck "lock desktop items" as well.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
