Lap top HP Pavillion dv6000
greetings friend at work Gave me his lap top to fix it. What it does it is in a cycle. control bar up above key`s on key board are volume, mute, dvd fast forward , fast backward, DVD, and Q and on switch for on little to left. They light up also harddrive light and monitor around finger area for mouse. I have it on right now and every 5 seconds all lights light up you hear spin up and off. Then it goes again and then off. Ant ideas ??

Sounds like a failing/failed hard drive.
Will the computer boot from a Live CD/USB?
If so, can it see the hard drive?

I have harddrive pulled and it is doing it again. I put it up against my ear and I hear fan but then hear click like some thing is hitting very light not loud Maybe something is hitting fan internally? but would that shut it down and then restart maybe causing overload?

Took laptop completely apart, CPU fan was plugged with nicotine and dirt, hair. cleaned all areas reassembled, tried to start, same scenario turn on count 123 and it is off count 123456 it starts and 123 it is off, With what I cleaned out could it be mother board?
The fan blows good for the seconds it is on.

1) Do you have some known-good, compatible RAM that you could try?
2) If you still have it apart, disconnect the CMOS battery for a while, (10 minutes or so). If the CMOS is scrambled somehow, hopefully this would reset it back to factory defaults.

I have no ram that fits this one, I have pulled battery for bios since reading your post. It is like when I charged battery it was dead and waited a while. Tried operation same result I cannot hold on button down to stop it only way is to pull battery Or it will do this cycle and kill battery

I did find some ram that fit and removed bios battery tried booting DEAD no lights except where my power in has that blue light around power cable and charging light is on but push start button and nodda, placed original ram and still DEAD, Removing battery on bios seem to done the trick on cycle and everything else Does that mean anything? Measured voltage on bios battery 2.4 volts. out of the box voltage 3

Sometimes pulling the power battery for the system for a minute or so brings it back to life after the battery is reinstalled, and sometimes leaving it out and running on the AC adapter works. But I still think it's a bad MOBO.

No I should have said with that after pulling bios battery nothing works after that. I hit power on button and even hold it nothing happens now. Question I have now lap top was 900. cost I can get brand new mother board from amazon.com for 158. Laptop looks good in texture no blemishes Harddrive I accessed for him to get music and pictures off it very smooth running harddrive With all that I know I am buying it for 40. Is it worth the money to fix it? in your opinion
