Blocking Websites
With the way things have been going, I have started getting more & more requests from my clients to block websites. When XP was around, I managed this with the host file. However, I don't believe this works with Windows 7 or 8. Is there another alternative? I have looked but have not really seen anything without a cost for it. Any suggestions? TIA

Thank you for the answers guys. Sorry did not get back sooner. Had to make a trip here to Ohio. CCT the only problem with the host file is they can bypass that with using Firefox or Google Chrome. Thank you Ferrit for the link will keep that under advisement for other clients. What I am trying to accomplish is there are something like 15 pc's in an area where I need to block all websites except for the medical sites allowed. This is where I am going to make sure those who are not following policy are forced to do so.

There is no sever strictly peer to peer network. Router is limited for blocking as the router they are using is a standard netgear purchased before I started helping them. I need to block all sites except for about 15 -20 medical websites.
By the way, just got back from Oh and was surprised to see the weather the way it was. Nice for this time of year.

While hosts file blocking cannot be bypassed (except using the IP instead of DNS name), it is much easier to block everything at the firewall - and that is the only realistic solution.

ALl of the decent Next Generation Firewalls have Content Filtering and can block based on IP or domain name some with wildcards and all. They are cheaper than a HIPAA Audit and have loads of extra features. We use SonicWALL and Cisco the most but I have seen nice ones from other vendors as well.

Again this is all great items and will be able to use for homes and small businesses to block things like Facebook & etc. My chore is to block everything and only allow certain medical sites. I am not comfortable with cloud based programs as for me they have not proved to be reliable and secure. ( Just my opinion.) I do appreciate everyone's input.

Sell them a router capable of blocking websites and set it up properly. The router will be around a hundred. You install it, set it up, and make it block what you want. You have two hours labor, plus the markup on the router.
