When I first went in to interview for a tech job, I did anything BUT make it sound like I was some kind of Guru. Even though I had some experience and even a couple of certifications under my belt at that time, I knew I didnt have a lot of practical experience gained from doing the hands-on work day in, day out. I made it clear to the manager doing the interview that I felt weak in a lot of areas, but really wanted to get the job to re-enforce a lot of the things I had learned about in school and I knew the only way to get it was by getting a job like they had available. I still believe that by being honest and sincere about my abilities and limitations with him got me that job. Now having been on the other side of the interviewer/ interviewee tabe a few times, I look for the same kinds of qualities in prospective candidates - people who will show enthusiasm about learning to DO the job, not boasting or blowing smoke to cover for what usually turns out to be some glaring INABILITIES. Everyone has to start somewhere... but usually not at the top.

Sounds to like alot of you have a personal grudge against people whom have some sort of degree and or certificate without alot of hands on. Computers were not as readily available as they are now, people werent afforded the luxury of sitting home and playing computer all night. I was laid off from work after 10 years of service so I went back to college at the age of 35 to get my bachelors in Network Admin. Never been on a computer before but I had a chance to learn somthing that my daughter was already doing in school. I graduated and as anybody can tell you who went from college to the workforce, I didnt know everything, and still dont. I am a Network Administrator now for a small gun manufacturing company and theres times I cannot find a fix for a problem, so I turn to RESEARCH and Tech Forums for help, and when possible I'll try to help when I can. I would never make fun of nor belittle someone for their lack of experience. People dont wake up one day and know it all, everyone of you started somewhere. Remember when? P.S. I type slow too. I think I follow the same rules myself. I would never knock someone for having certs and/or degrees (which I do have). I do think that it does take both the hands-on and school work.

I was told several times when applying for a job that I was the leading candidate. I was told this in person and on the phone. I kept calling untill I was sure they were jerking me around. It was a gig I actually semi-wanted. The people that do this are lower than whale sh*t! If an applicant does not meet specs tell them! Dishonesty helps no one!

If you know some one that regularly does this let them know this is chicken-sh*t! Better yet, kick the crap out of them!
When in doubt, blame the sales department!

I like cars and stuff and hot chicks.

"Sir, go out into the real world, get some experience and pay your dues like everyone else and learn it the right way, not in some controlled evironment of a Microsoft BootCamp. Respect the fact that most people that have good computer jobs have knowledge and that is why they are working and sought out. You can't buy your way into knowledge and respect, you simply have to pay your dues. Now go, young buck, before I punch you in the neck for wasting my time........

Geez, I guess I got on a rant.........I have seen this type of person so many times and they want to come off as "all-knowing". I would respect them more if they said, Hey, can you start me out at the bottom and let me learn and work my way up.......

    Red face

Well for all youse people out there that don't have experience or a degree/certs; come apply at my company. 3/4 of the people I work with have neither. Some gems of support my fellow helpdeskers have given include: You can't save our modem driver to a floppy, you must save it to your computerSo she has him remove the driver from the floppy, then uninstalls the modem?? Now that he has no internet capability she informs him he can download the driver from our website!!
Modem drivers get worn out that is why you update them Some of them refuse to take calls
(concerning wireless netwerkin gear)becuz they don't want to learn it. AND I AM ALMOST THE LOWEST PAID PERSON HERE!!LOL, man i need a new job.
