Check this out - seems that it does NOT install with XP1 every time.
Also try using a different port on your pc =- preferably one that is direct to the pc rather than thru a multiple port external device. I went round and round with this problem before this resolved it.
I've had an iPod for about a year now, worked fine (once recognized), but I noticed a couple weeks ago that when connecting, it said the now-cringe inducing "HI-SPEED device connected to NON-HI-SPEED hub" rig. I didn't think much of it because normally it flashes a quick 'device not recognized' type message which goes away and everything works fine. I was only sync-ing a few songs here and there so I never noticed the speed dropoff, but this afternoon I went to resync a lot more and the speed drop off was quite noticible.

I have the same stupid error occasionally with my Ibuddy. Try getting the latest usb driver from IBM for that laptop, and uninstal/reinstall. Don't know why it freaks out and drops back to usb1, but reinstalling usually solves the problem.

Same problem here. T40p, will work occasionally, any usb2 device I plug in has these problems.

I eailed IBM about it, their response:

Dear Sir / Madam.

I would like to thank you for your e-mail.

What you have to try is to update windows it is a driver in service pack 1.
If that fails you need to run a recovery.

Another thing, reinstalling doesn't help. Reinstalled drivers, reinstalled windows, sometimes the ports work, sometimes they dont, always it is frustrating. Try ripping a dvd on an external drive at usb 1 speed. Not fun.

damn hi-speed message on R40

Hey everyone,
I was wondering what the final outcome pertaining to the usb problem is/was. I have a Thinkpad R40 and have had the same problem while using both the ipod mini and the external 40GB USB 2.0 HD from IBM. Here is what I have done: (I am running WinXP Pro)

- installed XP SP1a
- installed USB update (one of those after SP1 deals you can get from MS)
- updated IBM BIOS and controller to latest possible version
- installed latest chipset utility from Intel
- used different USB 2.0 cable (for the HD at least)

here are some anomalies:
- both devices work at USB2.0 on desktops with WinXP Pro
- same devices work on similar R40 laptops at work running Win2K!

I still get that damned "Hi-speed USB device plugged into non-hi speed USB port" blah blah blah.

The BIOS does not have an option for me to set the USB to enhanced, only an option to enable or disable BIOS USB support (for USB CD-ROM or diskette drive).

What I have noticed in Device Manager is that when viewing all the devices by connection, both the ipod and external HD register under the ordinary USB controller, NOT THE USB2 one. I wish there was a way to drag and drop the devices to the other controller!

It seems all of our problems have some overlap. Anyone able to resolve this? I have called IBM tech support and they cannot do anything from a software perspectice. MS forwards my request to their website to "check out service pack 1". When I google similar errors online at various manufacturers it seems that there are many people getting the same problem (and in 2004 as well).

If there are other frustrated thinkpad users out there, let's unite! If you have any solution to mine or other problems posted in this thread please share your wisdom. Thanks.

I am having the same problem, but with not only an ipod but an external hard drive.

There are other instances of this I have found on the web and the key link is that an IBM ThinkPad is always to blame.

My inclination is to think this may be a systemboard problem, although I am not sure. The problem does not always start at hardware hook-up especially in the case of the hard drive, it sometimes connects at 2.0 then goes down to USB 1.1 (the ipod does generally start off at 1.1.)

IBM has suggested experimenting with a different hard drive to see if the problem continues (and are prepared to provide access to one for me). This may not be a properly controlled experiment, however, as the other hard disk may replicate the "starting" point of my current drive, but not the patterns of change which may take place again upon commencement of similar uses and updates.

I may therefore try to spring for a systemboard replacement. has anyone had a go at that yet?

Welcome to WinDrivers Jonathan. Judging by the number of usb2 issues I've been seeing, I think the problem is a buggy driver rather than your specific hardware. Many of these issues seem to tie back to the same chipsets or the same cardbus controllers. Therefore, I doubt replacing the board will help. What is the specific Thinkpad model you have?

I've currently tried it with two different 3G ipods, a Lacie 250GB external usb2 drive, an Iriver HP140, and a pioneer DVR-107D in a Stardom external usb2 drive enclosure. All four exhibit the same symptoms, that is they sometimes work, sometimes dont, sometimes work for a bit and then switch to usb1 in the middle of a write/burn (argh). If that isn't testing it with enough different drives I dont know what is. I've also tried different cables, all rated for USB2, have installed every driver and service pack under the sun, have reinstalled the entire OS a couple of times, and basically I'm at wits end. I would send the laptop in to IBM for warranty repair/replacement if I could afford to be without it for a while, but at the moment I'm in london and cant do so. It will have to wait till I'm back in australia and have access to a desktop machine while I wait for it back.

I would say that I'm never buying a thinkpad again if the damn T42p didn't look so sweet...

New board

I have a 2374 T40 and went through several hours of troubleshooting, some on my own scouring the Internet, some with IBM (very helpful, but no dice).

Neither my IPod nor my external hard drive (both new) were connecting at 2.0, kept getting that damn "hi-speed/non-hi-speed" message.

I finally reloaded my entire system, patched it to SP2 beta, updated the bios and controller program to the version released on 7/13, still getting 1.1 transfer speeds and the bubble message.

Just got off the phone, IBM is coming on 7/16 to install a new system board as the problem could not be resolved. I suggest that anyone else with a Thinkpad request the same since no company (IBM, Apple, Western Digital, Microsoft (!), etc...) is taking responsibility for the problem. At least IBM was easy to work with and did not balk at putting in a new board.

Good luck.

bios

I have a 2373G1U T40p and my usb devices are always recognized, but transfers only occur at 1.1 speeds. However, I am quite sure I had transfers at 2.0 speeds when I first purchased my laptop.

I too have reinstalled everything from the IBM service partition and applied all possible updates. They only thought I have to add is that maybe it is the newer bios that is the problem. I have always flashed my bios to the newest version. But the bios is the only thing that I can think of that is different on my laptop from when I purchased it.

Does anyone have this problem who is using the original bios that came with the T40p? I might try flashing to the original version of the embedded controller and bios to see if usb 2.0 starts working again.

Has anyone tried this?

Welcome to Windrivers dsb38 and graynu

Graynu, did a new system board solve the problem?

dsb38 if this is an intel based laptop, have you installed the intel inf driver?

url=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822603]have either of you installed this patch? also check the file versions in that mskb against your system.

same problem

Hi,

I'm running xp home SP1, P4, MSI mobo. I'm having a similar problem with the Ipod. When i first installed the ipod (4g 40 gig) I used the 2.0 that came with the mobo. This worked fine for the first few days. Then it slowd down a lot. Then it completely stopped working.

I bought a new 2.0 card, installed the drivers, and installed two usb 2.0 patches for windows. It says new hardware found, then says device is working properly, then says mass storage device malfunctioned. This seems like a windows problem to me. I dont have any other usb 2.0 devices i can test on the card.

In device Manager, is usb2 supposed to show up as "enhanced root hub" or not. When i installed the card, it shows up as enhanced host controller, and added more root hubs, but no enhanced root hubs.

The computer is not online yet, when it is, I'll try Updating the Bios. For now, i'll just search for new drivers.

Its a shame somthing so simple as an Ipod can cause me such a headache!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

I installed SP2, all possible udates, drivers, and other such things. Reinstalled ipod updater, and itunes.

I called Apple support again, and they said i did everything i can. They said to bring the Ipod to the Apple store near me, and have them test it out. Then they may give me a new cord, or repair the ipod. If all else fails, i'll get my money back, and buy some mp3 player that was built to run on a PC.

good luck to all others w/ this problem

Just something amazing !

I was just tapping under the back of my t40p and it started to work at usb2 speed !!!!
When i just move it a little bit it went back to usb 1 then i tapped again and magic it switch to usb2.

What it shows is that there is not any software or drivers problem as I also have the same issue on linux. It's a damn hardware problem wich require a motherboard change

My problem is that I don't have the time to send the thinkpad to IBM and wait one week.

When I called IBM I give the link of this topic to the tech to make them aware of this problem they seem to discover.I suggest you to do the same thing

Alex

PS: excuse my english by the way
