    My CD is not burning

I have a problem. I have a Dell computer desktop with Windows XP SP2 installed on it. I have recently tried to burn files to a CD-R on my computer but it has not worked.

The first time, I tried with Nero 9 StartSmart Essentials and selected up the file I wanted to burn. I clicked on Burn and was prompted to load the CD. I put the CD in the loader and clicked on Load. Nothing happened, and instead, after a few seconds, the loader opened again and I was prompted again to Load the CD!

The second time, I used CDBurnerXP. I did the same thing, selected the file and clicked on Burn. I looked on the icon that presented itself, and it showed that the CD was not recognized as writable!

If I am not wrong, CD-Rs are supposed to be writable, right? Anyways, I started looking around for help on the Internet. I got the idea of checking my CD/DVD drives. In Device Manager, under DVD/CD-ROM drives, the following are listed:

    Philips DVD +- RW DVD8701
    SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615

In addition, I noticed that there are couple of yellow question marks and yellow icons with exclamation points next to the following:

    Network Controller
    SM Bus Controller
    Video Controller
    Video Controller (VGA Controller)

Do you think that the preceding issues might be affecting my CD/DVD drives?
Is there a way I can get a new driver?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Windrivers the hobbit.

Open my computer, double click c: drive, look for the folder Drivers. In this folder you will find all the drivers you need. Go back to the device manager and double click on the items with the yellow exclamation points (one at a time) and click on reinstall driver. When the window comes up point it to the appropriate folder for that item and click ok. This sould take care of the problem after you reboot the system with all the drivers installed.
It's not the computers that keep having problems, it's the users!!

Hello Hobbit and welcome to Windrivers.

You have two optical drives - one doesn't burn disks - that's the sony one but the Philips does.

The symptoms you talk about are a common mistake that many people make - that is that if a CD-R has already been burned, you can't use it again under normal circumstances. The other reason you get the message that CDBurnerXP gave you is because the blank CD-R you are using is faulty or the drive is faulty.

So my first questions to you are:
    1. Which drive are you putting the CD-R in, the Philips or the Sony?
    2. Are you absolutely sure the CD-R you are using is blank?

As to the yellow icon on the other devices, you just need the drivers to clear that problem and no, it's not likely these will affect the ability to burn a CD.

What make and model is your computer? The Sony DVD ROM drive came from a DELL. If it's a Dell, then please find the Service Tag on the label on the back of the machine and post it here. Someone can then direct you to the right drivers to install.

If it's not a Dell, please provide as much info as you can about the machine so we can help.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Also, if using cd-r's to burn, be sure the amount of data to be burned is 630 megabytes or less. The burner will spit out a disk that is too small for the job asked. Good luck!

This is a side note, CDBurnerXp has a tendancy to not recognise that a burner can burn if it's an outdated version. If you haven't tried yet download the latest version, reboot and try again.

I think all the drivers need to be installed to start.
Be sure all the yellow marks are gone first.

    Zonie,

I was able to open Windows Manager. However, I did not find the Reinstall option so I decided to click on Update. Only one drive was successfully updated which was the Network Adapter. Two Network Adapters were found:

Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
    Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter

The ones remaining with the yellow exclamation points are the SM Bus Controller, the Video Controller and the Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

Should I uninstall them and reinstall them again after I restart the computer?

    Hi NooNoo,

    1. I insert the CD-R in the DVD-RW drive ( G.
    2. And yes, when I insert the CD-R, it shows that it is blank since I am prompted with the Burn the CD option.

My computer is a DELL desktop. I input the service tag on dell.com, which is 9N5GS81 and it shows that it is a Dimension 5150/E510. I tried to find the corresponding drivers but I am not sure if I looked right, because I didn't find anything. If someone can be of assistance I will appreciate.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Guts3d,

Yes, my intent is to burn mp3 files onto the CD-R. But at first, I tested burning with a small JPEG image and it did not work.

    Hi Niclo Iste,

Yeah, I installed the latest version on the internet which is CDBurnerXP version 4.4.0.2905. I uninstalled it yesterday because I don't want to have too many programs running on my computer. I might reinstall it though. For the moment, I am using Nero 9 StartSmart Essentials.

    Hi Ferrit,

So far, I have only managed to update the Network adapters and I found two:

Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
    Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter

The other ones still have the yellow marks next to them:

    SM Bus Controller
    Video Controller
    Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I will see if I can update Windows XP SP2.

    Guts3d,

I don't know if my previous post has been approved or not, but my later posts are showing while my response to your post is not.

In any case, at first, I tried to burn a small JPEG file to see if CD burning would work on my computer. But it didn't.

    NooNoo,

I responded to your post, but apparently it hasn't been approved, or perhaps not yet, or maybe there was simply an error.

    1. To answer your first question, I put the CD-R in the DVD-RW drive (G.
    2. When, the CD-R is inserted, I am prompted with the option to Burn the CD, so I know the CD-R is blank.

My computer is a DELL desktop computer. I input the service tag on dell.com, which is 9N5GS81 and found out that the model is a Dimension 5150/E510 . I have tried looking for an appropriate and updated driver for my CD Burner, but I don't really know where to look and I don't know if I looked the right way, so I didn't find much.

Any assistance in this regard is very much appreciated.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Zonie,

I did what you said. I opened Device Manager and double-clicked on the drivers with the yellow exclamation points next to them. However, I didn't find the Reinstall option, so I selected Update. I managed to update only one of them, which was the Network Adapter. Under Network Adapter, two drivers appeared:

Do you think I should uninstall all of them, and try to reinstall them when I restart the computer?

    Thanks for your help.

Like I said I need the exact model or the service tag from the back to find the drivers you need
