Windows 98 Shuts Down Automatically
Every time I start my computer, it automatically shuts down before I ever get to my desktop! How do I fix this problem?

Man, that has got to be annoying. First thing to try is to boot in safe mode. When you see the message "Starting Windows XX..." press F8 to bring up the boot menu. Then pick safe mode. Sometimes booting in Safe Mode once is enough to fix the problem; at the very least it might let you start Windows to troubleshoot further.
The second thing you can try is changing the settings in BIOS for power management. See if you can disable them; there may be at least one feature that controls automatic power off.

If the previous solution doesn't work I would try booting into SAFE mode and running system file checker. Be sure to check "check for deleted and modified files." This is done by going into STart>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Microsoft System Information>System File checker.
Update all files and if any need to be replaced, replace them.
If this doesn't work I would type MSCONFIG from the Run box next to the start button. Click OK then click Advanced then click Disable Fast Shut Down.
As a last result you might try running Virus Scan.
