Sound Events

Did an inplace upgrade on a Compaq Laptop from Win 3.1 to Win 95a, also install Service Pack 1. All went fine until trying to install IE4. Would not let me install no matter what, error message asking me to close all running programs and try again. Tried with only explorer running, no joy. Tried in safe mode, same thing. Ran regedit from safe mode command prompt to export and import registry, computer locked at 88% import. On reboot, all devices gone from device manager, ran add new hardware and all eventually returned except there are no events listed in the sound control panel. Device manager knows sound card there, speaker icon is sys tray and sound schemes are loaded. Any suggestions on how to get the event listings back. In case your curious, will also have to get IE4 loaded, intranet sites demand it.
