go to a friends computer and borrow the file on a floppy ,

make sure you put it in the same directory.

at the moment cant you just press the enter/space key and it will continue?

dependent on the machine , you may have a directory windows/options/cabs with your windows cab files , if so run setup.

or put your 98 disk in the cd-rom and go for it.

    good luck freddy

See if there is a copy first windows often gets paths mixed up and looks everywhere but where it should.

    At command prompt(c:>\) type "dir VMM32.vxd /s"
this will list every instance of vmm32 in every subdirectory. What MS have to say about missing VMM32.vxd

If it ain't on your machine then I'd say re-run setup, but if you like doing things the hard way here's another link :-How to manufacture your own vmm32.vxd

apolosises HaigyBhoy ,,,,it seems that i am totally incorrect suggesting that you can copy the file from another computer ,,,,i have just recieved a PM to tell me this. QUOTE:

    "Freddy

    here Vmm32

You are talking bollocks you can only copy it from another machine with identical hardware...."

yes i can take the critism ,

we are come on this forum to gather information for ourselves , and give help to others ,if we have had a problem (in working life) the same as there,s.

if I make a mistake -whilst attempting to help others ,,,then yes I will apolosise as soon as possible ,,and hopefully the other person will not waste time and effort in repairing, his or a customers computer.

if I had to be 100% correct , then as i got a question i would go away - read a book then return with a bill for £30.00 per Hr for reading.

as i said yes i can take active critism ,,,,but i was sensible enough to leave the senders name off the PM

It sort of looks obvious now who sent me that pm now.

    Enough said ,,,,,good night

Can we get a little more info to help you out.. Will windows boot at all (safe mode?) one thing you can do if you want is try a repair installation (reinstall windows ontop of current installtion) or if you want a new installation and want to preserve your files, rename windows folder and install. if you want to go back, just delete the new windows folder and rename the old one back to windows...

    Hi Glasgow, Dumfries here!

You know, at the risk of getting a PM telling me I'm talking a load of bollocks, I've done the copy and paste thing with the driver you're missing. I've actually done this with loads of machines and different apps- we run governement programmes, using W9X cos that's what many businesses use, and our learners often manage to corrupt, change, alter, knacker, sys files and set-ups such as changing settings in display. If I had to re-install each time, I'd close down!!!! At least W2K has file protection (providing someone doesn't disable it!)

The important thing is that you use a version of the .dll that is the same as the original - it needs common code with it's dependencies and interacting .dll's.

Have a go at Freddy's fix. And Freddy -you are right in what you said about criticism. Ain't it stange that some people won't air their views in public - especially when being so perjorative!!

    Anyway, good luck!

To fix that, remane win.com to something else in the renamed windowss folder. when your instalation is looking for "Previous versions of Windows" that is the file it's looking for.
