[RESOLVED] setnote.cpl and desk.cpl error

Hi, Please help with this issue if you can.
Had computer with Win95 on it and old mb with 72pin simms. Installed new Pcchips M598 integrated board, upgraded to Win98se. All went smooth except I change display settings. When I select control panel I get message that an error occurred and it refers to file SETNOTE.CPL in the win/sys... dir. I can go past that message but when you click on 'display' I get error msg referring to DESK.CPL and it will not let me in at all.

I get the same message referring to desk.cpl when rt-clicking on desktop also.

I have replaced file desk.cpl to no avail. I can find no reference whatsoever on microsofts site.

Do you have Microsoft Plus installed? If so it may have something to do with Desktop themes. In this case, uninstall plus and re-install it.

Has to do with a voice recognition program. Kind of hazy, but I remember having to uninstall Dragon software or IBM Via Voice.
If you have ANY voice recognition software, go to safe mode and remove it.
Also go to the MS knowledge base. There is an article or 2 dealing with this same problem.

docpc's dead on...how'd you know about the references in the kb? yeah, check article Q190367...it has some good ideas. or 277836 if you're running win2k.

Thank you so much for the info.

I am not at that computer but I'm thinking there might be some voice software on it. I don't see any reference to the desk.cpl though which is really what is causing a problem since you can't changes screen settings. Perhaps, the two are linked and it is all one problem? I will check it out.
