    Smile Installing full W98 over W95

    I am currently running W95 and purchased a new printer- which will only run on 98 and newer OS systems. So, my brother gave me his 98 disk since he has gone to XP - and loves it and "will never go back"...
    Anyway.... when trying to install 98 I get an SU1068 error and according to MS I needed to rename 2 files and then run the 98 setup from dos. The one file to be renamed I had on my system so that was not a problem. The other one was not on my system, so I then went through the MS "extract" method - or at least I tried to. On my W95 disk, there are no .cab files, which was where they claimed this file should be. The file on the W95 disk looks like a regular backup file. It is an OEM disk, that I purchased with the system from my computer store, so now I am not sure where the other file really is.
    So I decided to just try to install the 98 software without changing the "missing file's name" and it still gave me the SU0168 message. I called my computer guy and he said to change the Win.com file, which I did and this did not work either.
    Is there anyway to put this software on my system so I can get this new printer up and running?
    'Thanks in advance for your help and support. I perused through several of the sites on this forum, as I just "stumbled" upon it in desperation this evening!!!! I wish I had known about this site years ago when I just bought this system with W95. I wouldn't have lost so many years of my life in "frustration" with this OS..... There seem to be quite a few "Gurus" here!!!

    Cool

    I had the same trouble upgrading a machine at work - we only had the OEM edition of Windows, not the upgrade disk.

    Here is a clever way to get round this problem.

    1. Boot from a Win98 boot disk

    2. Delete MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS from the PC, then copy MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS from the boot disk to the PC

    3. Rename WIN.COM and WINVER.EXE in the c:\windows directory.

    4. Run the Win98 installation and it should now install.
