    Question Error Message On Server

I just completed the installation of NT 4.0 Server on my home computer in the same FAT16 Partition as Windows 98. I have installed Service Pack 6a, IE5, and Windows Messaging. I am able to access the Internet and retrieve my POP3 mail from my ISP. My problem is an error message that I receive as I am logging on that tells me a device or driver failed to start and to check the Event Viewer to see what the problem is. Below are the three items in Event Viewer that appear, each about 1 second apart. The event numbers are 7001, 7001, and 7023 respectively. The information under “Source” is Service Control Mar for all three events.

The Local Mail Delivery Agent service depends on the POP3 Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

The POP3 Server service depends on the SMTP Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The system could not find the environment option that was entered.

The SMTP Server service terminated with the following error:
The system could not find the environment option that was entered.

If someone could point me in the right direction on solving this error message popping up it would be greatly appreciated. This computer is not networked to another computer nor does it have a NIC installed. I know very little about Server as we just started this module in the MCSE course that I am attending. I had to back up, delete partitions, reformat, hunt NT drivers, etc. and this error message SEEMS to be all I have left to resolve on the installation.

    Thanks for the input!

    Check your mail accounts
You might have one there that is causing the problem, if so correct it or delete it, if it's an account your not using.

The problem has been resolved although I do not understand why. I would like to have anyone's input on WHY it is now working correctly.

I installed Norton Antivirus on Server but was receiving error messages in Windows 98 so I uninstalled NAV from Server. I then received a message telling me that since I had deselected my email client from protection, I would have to reconfigure its correct settings in order for it to work properly. So, I rebooted, received NO error message, and my email is working fine!

The readme file that was placed on my desltop by NT to help in configuring the correct settings said that my settings WITH protection were:

    Incoming POP3 Server: 127.0.0.1
    Outgoing SMTP Server: mail.ispname.com

    and WITHOUT protection:

    Incoming POP3 Server: mail.ispname.com
    Outgoing SMTP Server: mail.ispname.com

The best I can remember is that I set up both of these as peplink.pepperlink.net which is what I set them to when using the Internet Connection Wizard in Windows to establish a mail account on the computers that I sell. But, if I go to my ISP's home page and click on the "Check Mail" link, the interface says that the mail server is mail.pepperlink.net. I am relieved that everything is now working correctly but I would like some input on why.

    Thanks for the help!

I had the same problem, it was due to the new pop mail scanner that comes with NAV.

If you decide to reinstall it, check the user name field in the mail client. Mine kept appending the server name to the end of the user name:

    username/mailserver.isp.com/mailserver.isp.com/ etc.
When all that should be in that field is username.

I think the nav mailscanner intercepts all incoming mail to a temp mail server type program, scans it and then loops it back to the mail client (hence the 127.0.0.1 ip address)
