Cool

If your system is stable with 98SE, leave it alone. Loading ME will probably complicate things, and you will not be gaining much at all as far as features and stability (in my opinion). As far as the video, if you have all the correct drivers, and have the settings correct, then that is probably all you can do. I do not have much experience with the Voodoo2 1000 (besides knowing it is an add on 3D card), so someone else may be able to shed some more light on this. I have experience with the Voodoo3 2000 (current card in my system), and it does a pretty nice job for what I need.

Keep 98se,I use it on all four of my boxes, look at it,most of the bugs are out of se,me will have at least a year ot two of patches and fixes still to go,and really in my opinion me is for newbies it's just 98 with ie 5.5 and some other multimedia enhancements that i have in se anyway.and home networking is just as friendly in 98se.keep se.

If you're using your machine to create or edit multimedia, or play games, you'd better stay on Win98SE. It's more stable and everything works 100%.

My 2 cents...

If 98SE is working for you, stick with it.

Upgrade to me only if you a) want to edit movies.
B) Are a pic freak (digital camera...) some good tweaks for that stuuf.
Or c) (Very important) have more than 64 Mb of ram. Why? you ask. Because Win 98 can not use or take advantage of more than 64 or amybe 70 mb of ram. (good piece of advice for all)

I've been using ME for about 2 Months and the only thing I've notice is a few user friendly things, and a lot of help for those who want to network some systems, but don't have a clue what they are doing.

The one thing I've noticed so far is my Office 2K disk 2 won't install. It contains publisher and some other office stuff, but keeps locking up the system.

As mentioned before if 98 SE is working then go with it. Just look at how many different versions are already out of windows in general, so I don't think they will be done with this version either, or any version for that matter...lol

Keep 98 SE, If you do the upgrade, it will puke your system out, You would have to wipe the system and reload fresh, thats a pain. as for the voodoo 2 1000, you can get anotherone and link them internaly, I haven't worked on this card for quite some time so my memory might be hazzy, but If i remeber you can link the 2 cards together doubling you video card capabilities, I know one person who is using it and he says it gives similar performance to his voodo 3 3000 agp just an idea.

I actually re-formatted and put 98 back on my machine last night. My workstation in the office has ME and I either lock it up or crash it at least 3-4 times a shift. When at home, it does the same thing. We actually re-installed 98 on 3 of our machines at the office and they have worked fine since.

As for features, you can download just about anything that ME comes with from various websites. If you are contimplating upgrading to ME, I do not recommend it. I have only had problems with it. I do support for an ISP and see quite a few problems with connectivity. Especially with winmodems... even more that 98.

Thumbs down

i tech for a computer store/isp and have seen lots of connection problems with Win ME. i don't know what it is, but computers that worked ok under 95/98 won't hold a connection with ME(and yes that is with ME drivers). if it ain't broke.....

Ok, I have got to say this.. Windows ME is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.. It has saved my butt quite a few times.. The system restore option works pretty well.. Somehow when I went to back up an old 120 meg HDD for a friend, I pulled the IDE driver off of the 120 meg and it screwed up my configuration of my IDE drives (20 gig HDD, CD rom, and cd writer).. System restore put me back to functional when I couldn't do it any other way.

You want to know what the kills windows ME.. IE 5.5 and Windows Media Player 7.. Leave it to M$ to screw up something that would have worked well!!!

One last note that everyone's been skipping.. The Voodoo II is a 3dfx add on card.. The only time the card will even activate is when a game or app makes a D3D or glide request.. Load up Stars (the benchmarking program) and see what Glide will do for you...

--So Says Polychronopolis..
