I WAS NOT NECESSARILY THINKING ABOUT MOTHERBOARDS. WHAT ABOUT MODEMS? WHAT WITH ALL THE BAR CODE NUMBERS ON THE BOARD. WHICH IS THE SERIAL NUMBER? HOW CAN I USE THEM TO BETTER IDENTIFY A BOARD. I HAVE A COUPLE OF MODEMS (ONE IS A RIPTIDE SOUND CARD/MODEM) THAT I AM TRYING TO GET DRIVERS FOR AND AM HAVING A HARD TIME FIGURING OUT WHAT KIND OF COMPUTER (ie. IBM/NEC/HP) THOSE CARDS CAME OUT OF. I HAVE TRIED ALL KIND OF SEARCH ENGINES TO NO AVAIL. I'VE GONE TO THE MANUFACTURER'S (GVC) SITE AND FOUND NOTHING. I HAVE EMAILED THEM BUT THEY'VE NEVER RESPONDED TO MY EMAIL. OBVIOUSLY, IT IS A CHALLANGE THAT I AM NOT WILLING TO WALK AWAY FROM.
AGAIN I THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

It can be frustrating. The cheaper the computer the harder to find part numbers. I have at times givin up on parts and trashed them or put them in the bargin bin. There is nothing more irritating than spending three hours looking for drivers, downloading them, installing them and then finding the item does not work.

However, I have had really good luck finding companies by using the advanced and beginners search on the windrivers homepage. On occasion there are companies that simply do not support previous products. In these cases I have had good luck with generic drivers. I found this on windrivers.

Also, companies merge and sometimes change names which makes it more difficult. Rockwell and Conexant. STB and 3Dfx.

Good luck!

I did find the same driver at HP's site and during the installation, it is suppose to detect the Card, but that did not happen. so i am suspecting that the Card might be defecting. i am giving up on it and i think that it is heading to the trash since i wouldn't know where to send it for repairs. Since you mentioned about generic drivers for Rockwell, i have a card that windows detected as a PCI CARD and it has a rockwell chipset #R6793-12. I would appreciate it if you could help me find a driver that would work for that card.
Thank you for your help.
I also would like to know how you found the riptide driver. I had tried windriver and didn't find it there.

I could not find anything on that modem. I may not have all the numbers I need.

How I found the riptide drivers was by going to the windrivers homepage. Under the header on the left side at the top there is a Driver Search. I went into advanced and selected the modem icon and picked riptide from the list.

I noticed when I picked Rockwell there were choices for modem identifier and drivers. Look around in the drivers and see it you can find any numbers that may be on your card somewhere.

I hope I did not confuse you. I can show better than tell. Play around in the windrivers site. I am still discovering stuff!
