motherboard for gateway needed
I have a bad ide 1 on an older gateway 166..i am having trouble finding a used one..is there any compatibility problems in general or can i buy one that fits in the case?? or... is there anyway to replace an ide? thanx in advance..

You can get a promise controller or something of the sort and use the same board. Most Gateways are not 100% proprietary and other boards can be mounted in them. The backplate where the ps/2 ports are might be slightly different but they are usually removable.

I have a ton of experience with Gateway's Intel based motherboards. Maybe we can resolve your IDE problems. What's happening with it?

The original prob was a fresh fdisk and format,win98 wouldn't recognize cd rom,while troubleshooting i switched ide's on the mb and presto..a cd rom but no hd thus either bad belt or ide..correct?

Not sure what your problem is - how many drives are you using total?
Put the hdd as primary master and the cdrom as secondary master. Boot off a DOS boot disk that loads the correct drivers for the cdrom and try it. If it works then slave up another device to both channels to test them.
