    Post modem connection speeds

I'm attempting to setup a mini-isp, and so far I've been successful in getting routing and remote access in windows 2000 all setup so that I can dial in and get internet access.

The problem I'm running into is that the two modems will only connect at 28k. Both modems are 3com somethings (i don't remember the model #s, but I can get them if it will help). They are identical and are NOT winmodems.

I don't really want to go out and purchase and modem bank or anything at this point in time because I'm still kind of testing the idea. Is there any way I can get standard modems to connect at 56k over standard phone lines?

You may just have crummy phone lines. Call your phone company and have them run some tests. Regardless, the fastest I've ever seen a 56K modem connect is just over 50K...

You're not going to like this, but according to this page at 56k.com, the phone lines on your end have to be DIGITAL in order to support a lower incoming signal-to-noise ratio, thereby overcoming the limitations of the noisy old analogue phone lines. This is why two people connecting modem-to-modem can't get anything higher than 33.6k, since that's all that a plain old analogue line will support.

You might start by calling your telephone company, tell them you are starting an ISP, and want to know the rates for the 56k capable phone lines. I can tell you two things for sure: 1. They will only install these lines in a business premises (not in a house) and 2. they will be expensive.

Thanks for the link MacGyver, I kinda figured that's what the problem was.

The line will actually be for a school, so price isn't that much of an issue, plus we already have so many lines coming in the building that they usually offer reduced rates for extra stuff like this.

    Thanks again!
