Generic 'Sony' CDROM is recognized, but won't spin...
I'm running a PentiumIII 450 - with Win98. I have a SAF RW that's just fine, and also have installed a "generic Sony CDROM" that I'm pretty sure isn't a Sony drive, but came with a Sony driver (which I didn't install, I let Windows install the driver). It all worked just fine until the other day when I was trying to get the system speakers to work. Now it seems that I've blown away the settings and it recognizes the drive but won't recognize when I put a disk into it. I've tried reloading Win98, removing the hardware devices and reloading them, ... I need help. (Like I mentioned, the drive worked fine before, so it's definitely a software (aka, driver) problem.)

Disconnect the drive from the computer, power it up and insert a CD. If the CD doesn't spin the Drive is dead. It is a common problem for the moter that spins the disk to go out.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next... if anyone else has any insight, I'd appreciate that too... the drive is an old model, but was not used (however, it did endure a trip cross country)
