    Post dos recognized cdrom but...

win95 won't. I did a clean install of win95 on old 486; gave it away. Got a call saying they could not install Internet access from cd. Message was there is no such device.

How do I make win95 recognize cdrom since dos will???

    Any suggestions welcomed.

    TIA.

What CD-ROM drive is it & how is it installed? eg if through interface on sound card, what sound card etc?

Was the W95 installation done from this drive, using a boot disk, or booting off HDD, what drivers are installed in CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT etc.

The more information you can give us, the more likely we can offer some assistance.

It is an IDE cdrom, internal. I used a win98se bootdisk and installed win95b from a cd.

you may want to check for a boot sector virus. try going to http://www.invircible.com/iv_tools.php and downloading the ivinit tool.

Yep, check for boot sector virus, & if the drive was fully set up from the W98 floppy (fdisk etc) try FDISK /MBR from a WIN95B boot floppy (from another virus free system or after virus check) in case W98 boot record is upsetting W95. (FDISK /MBR will eliminate many boot sector viruses anyway.)

    Other thoughts:

If it is an OLD IDE drive it may not be ATAPI compliant, & may only work (in Compatability Mode) if its own driver is loaded in CONFIG.SYS along with MSCDEX.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT

Or the reverse, if a CD-ROM driver is being loaded in CONFIG.SYS when it is not necessary, it may be refusing to unload and stopping Windows from loading the 32-bit driver. (Although usually then the drive will be shown in Device Manager, but not work or be in Compatability Mode with a !)

Try the Install New Hardware again?
