CD rom not playing audio Cds
I am having trouble trying to get the CDrom to play audio cds, even though the drive is present and all other features seem to work.
I have removed it and allowed windows to find new hardware and deleted and reinstalled multimedia options using windows add new programs but all to no avail.
When an audio cd is installed the audio cd icon appears under My computer and the cdplayer program starts, but it displays "no disc or data disc" in the title box.
Double clicking on the audio cd icon does not display the contents.
As far as I can tell data disks are working fine.
It is a BTC 20x cdrom with a cyrix/IBM 6x86 P200 processor and Award bios 4.51
Any clues as to what to try next.
I did try another cdrom but that did not work either.

Try this:
Go into control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, multimedia and remove CD player. Reboot computer, go back to windows setup and reinstall the cd player. This has fixed this problem on some systems in the past.

Was the other drive you tried a BTC also? Maybe it was a Cyberdrive? I've found that both of these brands tend to be pretty flaky. Also your OS version may play a part in your problem, check out MSKB article at http://support.microsoft.com/support...&SA=ALLKB&FR=0
It points out an issue with the ATAPI spec and a problem with the first release of WIN95.

Tried the re-install (several times), Still no go. I am running Windows 98 so shouldn't think that the updated file as per MS site is any different to that shipped with win98
Disabled the DMA in CD properties (set on by default) but still no go. At this point I've run out of ideas, but am also hving other problems with the system stability wise, ie random Windows protection errors, yet somthing else to try to get to the bottom of.

Did you check the Audio Cable connection from the CD-Rom Drive to the Sound Card?

Do you have more than one cd rom ?
If so, you need to go into multimedia in the control panel and say which drive you wish to use for audio.

I have the same problem... And it appears my CD-ROM is connected using IDE to the motherboard and I appear to have no soundcard to speak of. I tried the DMA trick but to no avail. I have no idea why it died on me since it provided me with the ability to play audio CDs before. Tried fiddling with the system settings but to no avail.
