Question dead HDD or M/B ?

I got a Canon Innova Laptop that wont boot. The bios recognizes the HDD but upon bootup it comes "no operating system found".
Using a boot disk, it will still not boot.
Using a Partition Magic boot disk, it starts the program, then stalls just before it shows the details.
So, is this a dead hard drive or could it be the motherboard??

Have you tried booting to a boot disk with the HDD out of the system?
If it boots ok that way, then you have the answer...Bad HDD. If it won't, the it's time for a M/B.

actually before you replace the MB, you might want to reseat the mem first and try again.

Make sure all the screws are tight as well.

Reseat the RAM and the processor, but it sounds like MoBo to me....Also, remove any Peripheals or PCMIA cards before you boot.
