I have been given a Toshiba Satellite 200 CDT laptop, specs 100 MHZ Pentium and 24 MB Ram with a 776 MB Hard disk with 186 MB free and with WIN 98 2nd ED. and MS Office 97 installed.
Please can anyone tell me how to upgrade the laptop, such as a faster pentium chip(I don't know the motherboard so I don't know how to increase the multiplier) and more ram which I have. I don't know how to open up the machine so I do need a lot of help don't I? Thank you to all who help me. Cheers Terry |

I'm not sure that you can upgrade the processor, as I have had no luck getting any info out of toshiba on that subject since getting certified by then a month ago. I do know that memory upgrades are avalible from http://www.kingston.com . You shouldn't ahve to open the unit up to upgrade the memory. there should be a pannel on the bottom of the unit with 2 screws on one side. that is the cover for the memory slots., but the unit already has a memory upgrade in it since they only come stardard with 8mb. The max you can get the unit up to is only 40mb, so just look for a 32mb memory module, as there is (if memory serves correct)only 1 memory expansion slot.
Hope this helps somewhat. I will look up some more info tomorrow at work if you need, just leave a reply here.

The best way to add a modem, is using a PCMCIA one.
As for the floppy disk drive, it sounds a little bit strange. I've never seen a laptop without a floppy disk drive. Even some really old models, having a 286 CPU, had FDDs. Maybe it used an external one and they didn't give it to you. ------------------ "Matter is passive. In spite of its power, it can't be controlled without the human mind." Laptops use those smaller processors that are even sometimes sooldered hard to the mainboard, so unfortunately you are out of luck with upgrading the processor.
As far as the floppy drive goes, the satellite series allowed you to have a floppy and a cd-rom both, one was internal one hooked up externally through a small centronix connector on the side of the notebook. You could swap which was hooked internally and which was in the external casing. If whoever gave you the notebook don't have the floppy and external case anymore, you can probably get it from http://www.rcp.com Any memory vendor should carry compatible RAM that will fit that notebook. Good luck! ------------------ WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO TODAY?......Not that it matters, because Microsoft will crash on the way there!!! |

*#WARNING#* This is only theory as discussed between private citizens. I accept no liability whatsoever as it portains in any way to how this information is utilized or interpreted.
To install a RAM upgrade on your 200 series laptop - 1. Go to Toshiba's website and download the user guide for your laptop. Follow the instructions in chapter two for upgrading your RAM. -OR- 1.Turn the Laptop over. Look for a plastic cover with two screws on it and a small square picture that looks like an upgrade card with a chip on it - this is the RAM upgrade port. Remove the screws, take the cover off, remove the existing RAM upgrade CAREFULLY and install the new RAM by sliding the edge connector into the slot (edge connector is the gold edge of the upgrade) then pressing evenly to seat the card. Screw the cover back on and test. 2. If this covre does not exist look at the back of the laptop for a slot to install the SEALED RAM CARD (looks like a PCMCIA card) - NOTE if your RAM card looks more like bare RAM that you find in a PC skip this section 3. a.Turn the laptop over. b.remove the battery and cdrom c.remove the two screws on the bottom front (they became visible when you removed the battery and cdrom. d. Remove the single screw on the Hard Drive cover (it is in line with the other two you just removed.) e. Slide the hard drive cover off. f. Turn the laptop over and open the screen g. Tip the plastic cover in front of the keyboard out and up. h. Install the RAM into the connector. i. Replace all removed parts.
