More RAM!

I upgraded my laptop from 128M to 256 (running 2000 Pro), and Distributed.net jumped from 1.8 MKeys/sec to 1.95 MKeys/sec! That's a nearly 10% jump from a simple upgrade!

But buy the RAM from a local computer store. The Chip Merchant wanted only $70 for a 128M module, compared to nearly $300 for the same module direct from HP!

And keep in mind that many laptops that have hibernation partitions will be limited to a certain amount of RAM. My old Sony supported 256M, but I could only install 192M because that was the size of it's hibernation partition. If I installed more, I'd lose the ability to hibernate.

Just in case you missed it in the first four posts - need more RAM, oh and don't forget the RAM, some RAM should help.

Also the DELL will use up to a 20GB hdd, standard Laptop Drive, just make sure that the it is not too tall to fit in the drive rack.
