Lightbulb Do you predict a Notebook Standard?

Well we all love building desktop PCs but what I really hate is that you can't build your own notebook. I was just thinking today, other than the complications of inventing a new standard, technically its possible to build a notebook if the parts were being sold. It's already possible to upgrade the hard drive, RAM, and in some cases the CPU. And the manufacturer can upgrade any given part in a notebook, because they are the ones who make the designs for the equipment, as they are not sold retail.

So does anyone predict that some day in the future, manufacturers will agree on a notebook standard? Then we would see cases available for notebooks, motheerboards that would fit into them, CPUs that would fit into them, a standard keyboard shape, pointing device cutout, etc?

Any predictions or thoughts are welcome.

There are some standards like Mini PCI cards that alot of laptops use but I predict there will be a standard when hell gets a lot cooler. IT is a simple matter of brand differentiation. Look at the Sony Vaio, it looks like a Sony even from 100 feet away but look at alot of laptops and they all look the same because they come from the same manufacturer. (You mean Dell doesn't make their own laptops?). Personally I am really likeing the Asus laptops myself. I am not looking for the most colorful or the thinnest laptop.

No.

For there to be one "standard" to end all - would be like all the PC makers using the same exact mainboard. Too many components work together in too many different configurations to settle on a standard - and since each "brand" has a different form factor and location - it would be tuff - also there is not currently much of a market for a notebook standard - most laptop users are willing to buy new every three - five years as it is, so there is no motivation to standardize.
