Post ibm vs toshiba vs sony

hi and yes this had been done lots of time...but this time it's on the main three guys: IBM / Sony and Toshiba.
I'm planning to get an affordable laptop this September for college and boy am i lucky three big guys offers a good (if not best) for my money.

Recently three of these guys released an affordable model that fits into my budget.

Toshiba's S-100:

800 Cel
128 mb
13 TFT
15 gb
8 mb Trident
cd/
56k/lan build-in
1 years warranty
2.5 battery life
6.x pound
1799$ CND

Sony's new hot SR33 (just came out this month I believed)

600 Cel
128 mb
10 TFT
10 gb
8 mb S3
cd
56k
3 month/ (w/registration 1 yr)
3-5 hrs battery life
2.99 pound
1' thick
1699$ CND

ibm's i 1200
700 Cel
64 mb
10 bg
8 mb Trident
dvd
56k/lan build in
2 hr battery life
6.x pound
1 yr warranty
1499$ CND

Right now I have sony's SR33 berried deep in my mind after I saw the flyer couple days ago, however my friend and I had negative experience with sony. He had a laptop 2 years ago and it's kina screwed up and the warranty was over...it cost him 200$ Canadian just for the sony tech guy to look at and for it's a WM-EX5 anniversary walkman made out of aluminum and a monther after the warranty was up...it ****s up internally....o boy it sure costed hell lots of money to fix which i don't think it's worth the repair.

Sony's durable reputation has gone down.

anyway, what do you think?

thanks

as an asp for Toshiba, I feel compelled to tell you to buy Toshiba. ASP locations must keep a 3 day turn around to keep platnum status with Toshiba. Parts delivery is 12-24 hours, unless the part is on back order (then it can take a while). I do recommend asking for the 3 year warranty extension through TEPP (Toshiba extended protection plan).
As far as the most common repairs on Toshiba notebooks, modem door. I have not yet seen an s-100, so I don't know if it this would be an issue.

What ever you end up deciding on, check into extending the warranty. Its not uncommon to pay anywhere between $500-$1500 for a system board or LCD on a notebook. So think about that when your forking over an extra $200 to extend the warranty to 3 years.

Hi,
thanks for your opinion, the problem is that my budget is under 2000$ CND (tho i do have 2500 on me but school's starting soon so need some extra cash). With that being said, I guess the best thing is to wait for another month or two for more cash and extend the warranty to 3 year.

thanks

Will if you have money issues id go with IBM, you can pay monthly if you wish or pay all of it. And there products are very will made. I would really go with a sony but the one I would have is about $3000-4000. Plus I heard the cpu fans and the screen go out on them after 6 months or so.

Toshiba I dont know, I have some here art work, there nice no problems but thats all I know.

I say get a phat IBM thinkpad about $2000+ and pay monthly on it. Im thinking about doing this. Ive been looking into laptops and reviews for about 4 months now.

All three are great - but I would get either the IBM or the Sony - size vs. DVD - your choice.

I agree with Damned Angel, I also work with an ASP for Toshiba, And the modem door has been changed (Thank God) so thats not an issue with the new ones. I am looking to get a 2805-s603 next month(hopefully). The only downside to the Toshibas for most people is the "Eraser tip-like mouse" I do wish that they would come out with the Touch Pad instead.

Aggreed with the mouse nub, but one downside to touch pads are many people use too much force, or try to see if things like knives can make the mouse scroll. At least with the mouse nub toshiba gives you a bag of extras. And if you really hate the nub, you can always hook up a ps/2 mouse or touch pad.

Its amazing how nasty those "nubs" can get, we had one come in one time and we took it off and threw it up against the wall and it stuck, ew! I like the little portable mice that you can get for em, they're pretty nice.

If you must choose one of these, go with IBM, they're among the best made.

I used to use a Sony notebook which gave me endless problems, one day I'll get it fixed..

But, all these notebooks seem a little feature-light but price-heavy to me. Why not consider <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11072333&m=488&cat=494&scat=495" target="_blank">this one</a>? for 1400 bucks you're getting a lot more than you are with the above models.

May look like a great deal, but rember that our dollar is only worth about $0.69 american. So when you do the conversion, plus duty and shipping, its really not that much cheaper, if at all.
