[RESOLVED] Can win Me use more than 64 mb of ram?

Hi there
I know that win9x can work with up to 512mb of ram but I also know that 95 and 98 don't really take advantage of more than 64mb or ram I have been told that win Me can however the person that told me was not entirelt sure can anybody set me straight on this?

To the best of my knowledge win98/ME can 'see' up to 4 gigs of ram...though from a performance stand point theres no significant increase over 128 megs...though your mileage may vary

For a normal user 128mb is fine. For someone editting large graphics or movies you need way more than that (but then you'd probably not be using ME anyway?).

btw isn't the minimum RAM requirement for ME 64 megs? (or maybe its 32 i forget)

Win98 and Me can use more than 1024Mb of RAM.
You keep "seeing" the difference when adding up to 512Mb of RAM.

Try something simple. Scan an image and save it as a .tiff file. Make sure its resolution and color depth is the best available. Then open it with Windows Imaging and press the Rotate button once.
Do the same thing every time you add a 64MB memory module and write down the time it takes to do it.
You'll see the difference after adding the last memory module.

Hay I am back! First, I would not run Windows Millennium on any less then 96Mb RAM, I personally recomend 128 Mb.Min...
At the present time I am sitting in front of Two PC's, My PIII-1Gb, with 1 Gb PC133 RAM.
O/S=Win/Me Developers Copy. And my PIII-550, with 512Mb PC-133 RAM. O/S=Win/Me Final Version,I have had NO problems with either system !
(cleaning out my 550 just sold it to my neighbor),The company I do alot of work for has 7 machines in there Mega Lab with Win/Me installed, and we had some freeze up problems with the machines that had 32Mb & 64Mb,A few other problems also, I removed a 32Mb stick & put a 64 Mb stick in one with 64Mb and it ran fine with 96Mb.(PIII-450 Compaq), Also put two sticks of 64Mb in the machine that came with 32Mb (PII-300) End of problem! I setup there Novell Networks, And there Apple Talk, Win/NT, Win/2000, There an Educational Software Company I Set up there test enviorments. Nice Contract !! Any way Try 96Mb PC-133! GOOD LUCK

Well I've played around with reducing my 512MB RAM to 256MB and found that some windows operations like shutting down are faster. Anyone else seen this?

Yes sir you have a valid point there, Because the Ram not storing stuff in memory like ROM, but just holding it then dumping it each time you shut down the more RAM the longer it takes to dump the memory !
In english close the page then shut down. But Win/Me is a utility hog and after a few hours it will use 2 to 4 times the amount of RAM that Win/98 used to do the same amount of work. I'm not realy sure why But it does.

Ram is SOOO cheap these days, especially the pc100 stuff. (read in a computer source [www.computersource.com] letter to the editor a year or so ago where a fella said that only like 1.6% of the total system performance is determined by the ram speed.) Anywho, I originally ran a k6-2 500 off 64MB, and it froze up fairly often. I upgraded to 192, and it ran much smoother. Several months later, I have moved into a newer, cooler case, installed winMe, (was using 98 before winMe came out) got another 128, (320mb at this point) got an Athlon 1.1Ghz, then gave the original 64 to a friend and got a 256MB. (now at 512MB)
At every point in the chain, the system performance rose considerably. It's gone from cranky to purring and asking for more.

More ram is a DEFINITE must, and your system will thank you for it. (and my friends all call me 'server-boy' now, cuz i got the comp best suited to it)

I have been running WinME with 192MB, soon to be 256MB since August. It definately runs better since I upgraded from 128MB.

The 64MB thing may have been true with Windows for Workgroups, but that's been a long time ago!!!
