Usually my computer dials right into MacAfee first boot of the day and shows me updates and news. Today and last night my computer dialled up but did not get me to MacAfee. I cannot access their website or facilities any way. My computer is acting strange and a screensaver I have been using for years with Win95/98/ME freezes display properties. I am using Windows ME. Have I got a virus despite having MacAfee or is something not ok with my computer or MacAfee? Is it W95.MTX?

I'm accessing Mcafee with no problems (although it is slower than usual). Can you access other internet sites? You can also run your antivirus to scan completely all your drives. You also might have some file corruption.

Hi Jay,
I can access all other sites and my connection is ok and no problems with Outlook Express. I can only use MacAfee online. Angie ------------------ Morselady/G0HGA http://morselady.topcities.com/index.htm http://www.qsl.net/g0hga/index.htm http://nunkyclass.topcities.com/index.htm |

Isn't there a virus that blocks access to the AV sites? See if you can get to Symantec's Norton AV pages.

I can get to Norton ok but each time I click on trial it comes up not available. I do not want to buy another AV program when I have already got one. I seem to have no option but to use my HP restore disks and format my hard drive and hope the virus has not got to the Bios because on this HP Pavilion access to Bios is limited. It means losing about lGB of sound and graphic files because I have no backup device, am looking around for an external CD writer, so as the computer runs ok otherwise, would I be doing any harm using it and avoid sending emails from OE in case I infect anyone, until I can find a CD writer, backup my files and format(and maybe instal Windows 98SE at the same time). Pity ME does not boot to DOS. I cannot understand how a fully protected computer which has all fixes .dat files installed can get a virus and I am annoyed that I cannot scan offline. If I choose not to suscribe to MacAfee after my HP new owner trial is up, and got Norton, could I scan and fix viruses offline? Just a thought, I was online for nearly a year with my old computer with Windows 95 upgraded to 98 and NO AV and I never had any problems on or offline. This computer has been nothing but trouble since I got it two months ago and I had to send two back. Windows ME or HP?

You can purchase Norton or McAfee for installation, free updates, and offline scanning. The version of McAfee you are using is different than one purchased at the store. And past freedom from virus trouble is not relevant to the present. They have become much more prevalent in recent months and AV software, even with the most recent definitions, isn't a guarantee--just a little help. Backup, backup, backup. In case any of you don't yet understand, I'll make it a little clearer...Backup!

Thank you sowulo and message received and understood regarding BACKUP. Everything that can be put on a floppy is backed up, some using file splitter, but I have some files too big for floppies so CD Writer is now a priority. Will buy a decent AV too.

This computer will not let me see downloads for any AV programs and on CA I can only get the FAQ etc. I am going to close this computer down now and boot up my old one and get some AV software to put on here and yes, I will use clean floppies out of the box.

It was not a virus because when I booted up this morning my computer dialled right into MacAfee as usual and I was able to download an update and do an online scan of my entire hard disk and no virus found. I do remember some weeks ago when my ISP NTL had an email problem some people could not run their AV programs. I will purchase Norton so I can run virus scan offline and maybe go back to BT.
Thanks to everyone who responded. Angie ------------------ Morselady/G0HGA http://morselady.topcities.com/index.htm http://www.qsl.net/g0hga/index.htm http://nunkyclass.topcities.com/index.htm [This message has been edited by morselady (edited March 24, 2001).] |

Good luck. Please, do yourself a favor and DON'T get NAV. It just isn't good enough, period. Get AVP or FPROT. Questions? Email me or just go here: http://www.botnaybay.com/compare.htm or http:..www.botnaybay.com/virus.html
