Similar Problem(CDRW / DVD DISPPEAR)
First I"d like to thank in advance anyone who can lend their help. I've been picking at this problem and I just can't seem to figure out the solution.
Here's my situation:
P3 733
256 megs of ram
IDE acer 8x4x32 CDRW
Running win2k
I was burning cds (I'm backing up my hdd to reformat and install 2 new os's) and I got a power calibration error(in nero). I left my computer up all night to complete some uploads. I come back the next morning and it's frozen. So, I restart the computer to come to realize that there is no long a d or e drive(my burner and my dvd rom). I called acer twice and both tech reps I talked to were very rude. I can't seem to figure out he problem myself. I'm almost 100% sure that I need some sort of regular cd driver but I can't seem to find one. I downloaded microsoft's service pack but that didn't seem to releive the problem. I still see the yellow exclamation mark over the icon in the device manager but have absolutely NO access to either cd drives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! (even a link to generic win2k cd drivers, I can't find them ANYWHERE )

Geezer
So you had the little exclamation mark before and after or you don't know?
Either way post the chipset.
You need to stop the IDE driver being in conflict with whatever.
I'm puzzled as to how it worked before but it must have for nero to have kicked an error, though I think nero might try to use BIOS control if all else fails.

Geezer
It's the IDE controller, get rid of the exclamation marks. Boot into safe mode and delete the ide controller, windows hopefully will find it correctly.

Check that you don't have one of the Stealth boot sector viruses.

No luck, I uninstalled the control(on the mobo) and it found it.
I"m still beign prompted to install my cdrom drivers. Any idea where to get generic cdrom drivers(cdrom.sys) for win2k. They aren't on my computer, anywhere =/
