Red face Odd cable connection problems

Having problems with my home PC. I'm using Win98 and I'm using a comcast cable connection. I'm having problems using the actual connect. I can't use internet explorer, instant messaging programs, and can't connect to a number of different multiplayer games. I can however ping everything with both IP address and the domain name. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? or what I should try?

can you browse to an ip address? do you have a firewall installed? What os are you running? Are you using a router? are you unable to browse in just IE or have you tried Netscape? See if hardcoding your DNS servers to your nic make a difference.

You may want to try re configing IE. Goto tools/internet options/connections and run setup again.

    Just a thought..

    winsock reg key?

    Try uninstalling TCP/IP then reboot.
Then delete Winsock2 reg key and reboot.
    Then reinstall TCP/IP.

You'll probably find that some app (probably file sharing app of some sort) has overwritten Winsock with it's own version.
